How to create your
page
Homepages began as a way for internet surfers to keep track of their own favorite links, similar to a glorified bookmark list. They quickly evolved into a medium for self-expression and a way to give other web users new avenues to explore.
The process of creating and implementing a personal homepage is an involved, though not difficult, endeavor, with three basic steps:
- Create your homepage
- Move your homepage to our internet server
- (Optional) Sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor
On to Creation
The first and most important step in implementing a personal homepage is actually creating the page. To do this, you need to know a few things about the internet. First, most pages on the internet are not made by advanced computer programmers or system administrators, but rather by regular computer users. They use a simple language called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) that anyone, with about a half-hour's study, can master. Visit the following links to get more information on how to create web pages using HTML.
Second, when preparing your page, remember that on a UNIX
server, like the primary server
here at i-55.com, all filenames should be in lowercase. So,
when making links off of your homepage, always use lowercase
letters.
Also, the main page of your personal website should have the
name index.html.
Last, when creating a homepage,
remember these few things:
- Have a central idea - a focused
page is easier to use and remember than a meandering
page
- Keep it short - no one likes to
wait for a large page to load. If your page begins
to get long, break it up into two or more smaller
pages.
- Give your page personality - there
are thousands of generic homepages on the internet...make
yours unique by using interesting color combinations,
unusual spatial arrangements, or anything that will
make your page one to remember.
